23andMe Publication Dataset Access Program

23andMe is committed to supporting genetic research by enabling access to data we have included in our publications. We provide access to full summary statistics through a Data Transfer Agreement that protects the privacy of our participants’ data.

How to Submit a Request

Non-Profit Institutions

If you are a non-profit institution, please submit your data request for review by completing the 23andMe Publication Dataset Access Request Form. The information you provide on this form will be used to generate a Statement of Work (SOW) that will allow 23andMe to transfer data to you for use in the research project you describe. The SOW and DTA will need to be signed by your institution and 23andMe before data can be shared. If you are collaborating with investigators at multiple institutions and those institutions must also receive copies of 23andMe summary statistics, please have a PI from each institution fill out the form to ensure all parties receive access to datasets within a similar timeframe.

If you can’t access the form, please read the FAQ “I can’t access the form. How do I submit my request?” for more information on how to submit your request.

Commercial Institutions

If you are a commercial institution interested in receiving 23andMe summary statistics, please reach out directly to bd@23andMe.com to receive more information.

Additional Information and Requirements

  • 23andMe data cannot be distributed, shared, or sold to third parties.
  • Researchers must agree that the results of their research will be published in open-access scientific journals (or open-access articles) and according to 23andMe’s publication best practices. Currently, those best practices only allow for the publication of summary statistics for up to 10,000 SNPs; this applies to meta-analyses that include 23andMe data
  • Researchers may not file for intellectual property rights covering the results of research using 23andMe data.
  • If researchers request 5 or more GWAS datasets, the 23andMe team may reach out to them for additional information.

FAQs

Request Process

I am the designated researcher on a project and I would like an update on the project’s legal agreements. Should I reach out to dataset-request@23andme.com?

No, please check with your PI instead. For the sake of efficiency, we only communicate with the PI.

What information will I need to provide?

The Publication Dataset Access Request Form will require the following information:

  • GWAS you would like to request
  • If the GWAS data will be used for:
    • Polygenic Risk Scores
    • Meta-Analysis
    • Identifying drug targets
  • A project proposal including:
    • Title
    • Hypothesis
    • Non-Technical Research Summary
    • Proposed Analyses
  • Publication plans and timelines
  • Researchers at your institution who need access to the data
  • Collaborators at other institutions who need access to the data

I can't access the form. How do I submit my request?

Before we prepare and sign a Data Transfer Agreement with your institution, please download and complete the Publication Dataset Access Statement of Work Document according to the instructions below. Note that you should not sign the document at this stage, and there are some fields that you should not complete.

If you are collaborating with investigators at multiple institutions and those institutions must also receive copies of 23andMe summary statistics, please have a PI from each institution submit a dataset access request to ensure all parties receive access to datasets within a similar timeframe. Collaborators should only send the request via email if they cannot access the 23andMe Publication Dataset Access Request Form.

When you have completed the required fields in the form, please download the SOW as a PDF and send it to dataset-request@23andMe.com, with the subject line: [PI’s Last Name — Publication Dataset Access]. A member of our Research Team will respond to let you know when your form is approved.

  • Your research topic or hypothesis
    • Character limit: 250 (including spaces)
  • Analyses you plan to perform using 23andMe data
    • Character limit: 500 (including spaces)

Data Use Questions Please indicate whether 23andMe data will be used:

  • To generate genetic risk scores (and if you are willing to share your model with 23andMe prior to publication)
  • To identify novel drug targets, and/or
  • In a meta-analysis
Plans for Publication Describe your estimated timeline to publication, including information on your target journal if available.
Signatures Do not sign the form at this stage. The Statement of Work form and a Data Transfer Agreement will be returned to you for signature after 23andMe’s review and approval.

How can I streamline this process?

You can streamline the request process by coordinating legal document signatures. We recommend the following:

  • Communicate with your institution’s contracts office as soon as possible
  • Inform collaborators at other institutions that they will also need to submit a request

To facilitate these conversations, we created a one-page Publication Dataset Access Summary. Please feel free to download and share this document as necessary.

How long does it take for 23andMe to process my request?

Once 23andMe has received a complete and correct request form, we can generate a template agreement and SOW within 10 business days. Once 23andMe receives the DTA and/or SOW signed by your institution, it takes approximately 4 weeks for 23andMe to review and sign these documents.

How can I check on the status of my request?

If more than 5 business days have passed since you completed the request form and a member of our team has not contacted you, you may follow up by emailing dataset-request@23andme.com.

If 4 weeks have passed since you or your institution contracts office has shared a partially signed DTA and/or SOW with us and we have not returned the fully signed version, you may follow up by emailing dataset-request@23andme.com.

Who can I contact with more questions?

If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact dataset-request@23andme.com with the subject line “Question about Publication Dataset Access”. A member of the research team will get back to you within 5 business days.

Legal

How can I access the required legal documents?

After reviewing your request, a member of the Research Team will use the information provided via the Publication Dataset Access Request Form to draft an SOW and DTA. Once ready for signature, the documents will be emailed to the email address provided in your request.

Which legal documents are required, and who needs to sign them?

To access summary statistics, we require the PI and an institution signing official to sign a Data Transfer Agreement (DTA) and Statement of Work (SOW). After receiving your form response, 23andMe will send the PI these documents for partial execution. The DTA protects the privacy of our participants’ data, and the SOW outlines how you plan to use the summary statistics.

Dataset Access & Analysis

I’m collaborating with a PI at another institution. Do they need to submit anything?

Yes! If you are collaborating with investigators at another institution who will need to access the summary statistics as part of this research project, please inform those investigators will need to fill out the Publication Dataset Access Request Form, sign an SOW, and sign a DTA with 23andMe.

Who can access the data that 23andMe will share with me?

Only individuals listed in your request form and who work at your institution may access the summary statistics.

Which data can I access through this program?

We provide access to de-identified summary statistics from published 23andMe GWAS for use in your research through a data transfer agreement.
